Network for Endangered Sea Turtles 24 HR. HOTLINE 252-441-8622

It’s official.  We have tied with last year’s record-making year of 18 nests and we still have more season ahead of us!

The turtle crawled in on the right, laid her eggs, and crossed over heading right back to the ocean.

The Stalter’s normally cover the Friday run but they had to go out of town this week.  Lucky for Karen, because she volunteered to fill in for the north run and that’s when she came across a beautiful loggerhead crawl.  In the same fashion as the other 4WD nests, she went up the beach and laid her eggs on the high berm above the high tide line.  Barring any storm activity, it should be a good site for the nest so the nesting response team did not need to relocate it.

Nesting Responders arrived and worked quickly to locate the egg chamber.  The turtle didn’t make it too easy because she made a sharp turn on her exit and nearly crawled over her egg chamber.  But it was not challenge for Betty, in less than 5 minutes she found the eggs.

Betty finds the eggs.

Once the egg chamber was located, the team worked to set up a barrier that would direct traffic around the nest site so that the eggs can incubate safely for the next two months.
