Nest #44 was found in Southern Shores this morning. The turtle crawled up the beach, started to excavate a nest site but stopped. She then hauled further toward the dune where she finally laid her eggs.
That factors that influence nest site selection in sea turtles has yet to be fully understood. Sediment composition, moisture, distance from water… no one really knows but mom. For whatever reason, we’re just glad she found the right place to leave her eggs!
The team quickly located her eggs and staked off the site for a likely October hatchling fest!
