Southern Shores is finally on the nesting map!

It was a busy Tuesday night full of sea turtle activities when we got reports of a sea turtle nesting in Southern Shores! Volunteers were sent out quickly to respond and respectfully watch over momma sea turtle as she was laying her eggs. The nest was then marked off that night so our nesting response team could find it in the morning! The A team or should I was the SS team got right to work and it was decided by NC Wildlife biologist KC that the nest would have to be relocated to higher ground to ensure the nest’s safety. In the picture above volunteers are working together to carefully remove the sea turtle eggs in the correct order and into egg cartons for safe transport.

Volunteers carefully relocating eggs into new nest location.

Egg Chamber

A beautiful new nest was made in homage to momma sea turtle and her eggs were safely put into the new egg chamber. Since a relocation was done we were able to count the eggs and in total mom laid 143 eggs! The team wished the hatchlings the best and the nest was marked off with stakes, caution tape and our sign! Thanks to our awesome response team for a quick and efficient relocation!
